I Have... Who has.... {Freebie + Giveaway!}

Posted on 05:45 by the great khali
Hi!  It's Deb from Crafting Connections with you again this Friday!  I am guessing that there are few among us who have not played a version of "I have... Who has..." in our classrooms.  When I walk into an upper elementary classroom and students spot me carrying "I have... Who has...", cheers erupt!  (I'd be curious to know...does the same thing happen in your classroom?)

For those who have not played this game in your classroom, I encourage you to give it a try!  In fact, to provide further encouragement, this Greek and Latin Roots game is a FREEBIE at my TpT store through the weekend.

Little prep is required.  Simply cut the cards apart prior to class, and then pass them out when you are ready to play the game.  The person with "I have the first card.  Who has..." reads first.  At the end of each card, a question is posed.  Whoever has the answer to that card written at the top of THEIR card reads next.

These cards are part of my Beginning Prefixes game.

Students love this activity because it's fun!  They see it as a game.

As a teacher, I see it as so much more than that!  These are a few of the benefits of playing this game.

  1. Students are exposed to the target content in an engaging way.  There are literally hundreds of these games available.  One can find an "I have... Who has...." game for almost any upper elementary math, reading, or language topic!
  2. Students work cooperatively as a team.  When I play this game with students, we almost always play at least three rounds.  (And if we don't have time to play multiple times, boy, do I hear about it!)  Each round, I time how long it takes to advance through all of the cards, and the first round always takes awhile.  In the subsequent rounds, the students try to break their record, which they usually succeed in doing.  They not only help each other, but also encourage one another to pay attention!
  3. Students have an opportunity to improve fluency and voice volume.  When playing this game, it is very important to speak slowly, loudly, and clearly.  If you read too fast or too quietly, time is wasted because the class has to ask you to repeat yourself.  Therefore, students quickly learn to read as fluently as possible.
  4. Students have to pay attention and listen critically.  If they are caught not paying attention, they are letting their classmates down.  (I find that students pay attention quite well, though.)
I have learned a few tricks over my years of playing this game with students.  I make an answer key by cutting the pages in half, and then taping the strips together so that I have a very long strip of cards that are in order.  I put this strip under the document camera.  This is helpful in a couple of ways.  This is very helpful for those students who have a hearing disability or who just need to see the words written.  This is also helpful for me because I can easily catch any errors, especially when playing with cards that are very closely related.

Strips are taped together.

This game is also wonderful to play with small groups of students.  The advantage of playing it with small groups is that each student holds (and is accountable for) multiple cards.  They have to pay attention the ENTIRE game.  I have them begin by laying their cards face-up on the table.  After they read a card, they turn it over.  By doing this, it is easier to keep track of which cards have been "played".

A small group of third graders play the prefixes game.

This BUNDLE will be discounted to $21 this weekend; that's less than $0.50 per game!

The above list shows all of the "I have... Who has..." games that I have created to use with my students. Enter the raffle below for a chance to win this "I have... Who has..." BUNDLE!  I will draw one winner on Monday morning!

Reaching All Students

Posted on 23:00 by the great khali
Some students in my class this year need more intensive intervention to help them progress with their reading proficiency. I've found that I'm pulling out resources I used when I taught first grade.
Most of my target students have not yet mastered their sight words.

Here are some materials I've put to use to meet their needs:

1.  Snap Words by Child 1st
This resource is great for visual learners. It shows a word with a visual cue, hand motion and sample sentence.

2.  RAN boards
Rapid Automatic Naming Boards are useful for fluent mastery practice. Words or phrases are repeated over and over on the board. Students practice reading them as fast as they can.

3. Swat It Sight Word Games
I've made resources for all the Fry Words in a fun game format. Students compete to swat sight words with a fly swatter which is by far a favorite!

What is in your bag of tricks for reaching all students?

Race to 100! {Teaching Crisis Averted}

Posted on 21:00 by the great khali
I can't change a flat tire or drive a stick shift. I can't cook without googling every verb in the recipe. Side note - WHY are there so many ways to prepare food that start with b?! Bake, broil, baste, boil, beat, braise, brown....it's a good thing my fiancé is an awesome cook, otherwise we'd be on the Ramen noodle diet.

HOWEVER...over time, I have developed a very specific set of skills that all teachers share. I can silence a noisy room in 472 different ways. I can elicit a confession with a simultaneous head-tilt and eyebrow raise. And, perhaps most importantly, I can pull off a pretty awesome Plan B at a moment's notice. Teachers are the ultimate masters of the alternate plan.

We had our math MCAS this week. I've got to hand it to my little friends - they worked their little tails off! I figured after two grueling days of testing, they deserved a game day in math. I decided to do different stations around the room with playing card math games. Easy-peasy.

I had to call a parent during my prep period, but I just needed to leave myself a minute at the end to grab my bin full of playing cards and game directions. I popped the top off my playing card bin and - GASP!!!! No playing cards. I wish *I* could have seen my face - I probably looked like I was auditioning for the role of Kevin McCallister in Home Alone.

I needed a game - and fast. With 5 minutes left of my prep, I didn't have time to make anything or run off copies. Top Chef style, I grabbed the best ingredients I could find - hundreds charts, dice, and ones blocks - and another game was born.

RACE TO 100!

Materials Needed:
Hundreds charts
Dice
Ones blocks or any other player pieces
2 or more players

Object:
To be the first player to reach 100

Math Skills Reinforced:
Multiplication facts 0-9
2-digit by 1-digit multiplication

It was a fun way to work on our multiplication and a big hit with my third graders. Another teacher crisis averted.

On another note, I've added a new "Freebies for Fans" tab on my Facebook page! "Like" me there to download fun freebies, like these bright chevron numbers!

If you want to check out my math resources, click here to visit the math section of my TpT store!

Happy Teaching!

Guest Poster: Rachael Parlett, Pockets of Poetry

Posted on 03:00 by the great khali
Did you know that April is "National Poetry Month?"
It's a great month to expose your students to this fun reading genre!  Whether you do an entire unit on poetry, or just touch upon it for a week, students are sure to get excited about poems!  There are poems for everyone!  There are so many resources both online and in hardcopy!
It's easy to get lost online perusing through the gazillion poetry websites for kids.  Here is just one of my favorites that can help students practice fluency, poetry terms, word work and more!

Giggle Poetry

This site teaches students how to write a poem, and read with expressions (there are sooo many poems right on the site for students to practice reading in the "poetry theater" link).  There are also interviews with many children poets.  There is even a section where students can read a poem and rate it!  It would be a great site for students to explore during computer time!

In addition to this online resource, I also wanted to share with you a fun game that I created that your students can complete at a literacy/poetry center.  This center will give your students practice in identifying different elements of poetry (similes, metaphores, hyperbole...etc...).

On each "pocket" there is a poetry element.  These elements include:
simile
metaphor
personification
onomatopoeia
hyperbole
alliteration

Students read poetry cards that have an example of one of the elements listed above.  The student places the poetry card in the correct pocket (a total of 4 cards per pocket).  Then, the students show their work on a recording sheet.
It's super easy to put together:
There are a total of 6 "pockets."

I recommend laminating all of the pockets and cards for durability.

You can glue (or staple) the back of the 6 pockets on the inside of a file folder to keep all of the pockets together, or keep them lose and store all pockets and cards in a ziplock bag.
Assessing your students' understanding of the elements is easy by collecting this recording sheet:

I've provided an answer key too!  Even better :)
Use this game during the month of April or any time of the year that you expose your students to this fun genre!
Enjoy!!
